Viking Unst for Schools

Current Activities
- We are working with local schools to develop educational resources in line with the new Curriculum for
Excellence. We will be trialing these new materials in Summer 2008.
- A number of schools have already engaged in visits both to our archaeological sites, and to the Skidbladner longship.
- Many schools in Shetland choose to cover Viking topics around the time of Up-Helly-Aa. We have helped to bring the subject to life with object handling sessions in the classroom.
- Following on the success of our archaeological 'practice trench' at Hamar, which was enjoyed by both school children and site visitors in the summer, we are developing a mobile 'dig box' that can be taken to schools throughout Shetland. It will give children the chance to try being an archaeologist for themselves!
